Its inception dates back to 1947 AD during the reign of King Farouk under the name of the Institute of Sudanese Studies, and it was affiliated with the Faculty of Arts at Cairo University. It included the Departments of History and Geography, then the Institute became independent from the Faculty of Arts in 1950 under the name of the Institute of African Studies. In accordance with the Republican decision of President Anwar Sadat in 1970, to become the Institute of African Research and Studies, and it includes four new departments: political and economic systems, anthropology, African languages, and natural resources, in addition to the departments of geography and history. The Prime Minister’s decision was issued on December 3, 2018 to transfer the Institute of African Research and Studies to the Faculty of Studies. In conjunction with Egypt's preparations to assume the presidency of the African Union, the Egyptian political leadership represented by His Excellency President Sisi believes in the importance of this ancient African scientific edifice to consolidate and improve Egyptian-African relations with soft powers and scientific research.
