Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
"We are bringing our European values into the digital world," said Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, on Friday. Through strict rules on transparency and accountability, our Digital Services Act aims to protect our children, our societies and our democracies.
And this came in statements on the X platform, “formerly Twitter,” today, Friday, and von der Leyen added, “As of today, very large Internet platforms must implement the new law.
Google, Facebook, TikTok and other big tech companies operating in Europe are facing one of the most far-reaching efforts to clean up what people experience online.
As the first phase of the EU's groundbreaking new digital rules will enter into force, the Digital Services Act is part of a suite of technology-focused regulations drafted by the 27-nation bloc, a longtime global leader in cracking down on tech giants.
The DSA, which should be initiated by the largest platforms on Friday, is designed to keep users safe online, stop the spread of harmful content that is either illegal or violates the platform's terms of service, such as promoting genocide or anorexia, and looks to protect basic rights. Europeans like privacy and freedom of expression, and some online platforms, which could face billions in fines if they don't comply, have already started making changes.
