At dawn on Friday, 3 missiles targeted the American embassy located in the Green Zone in Baghdad, before landing in the vicinity of this neighborhood, which includes foreign embassies and Iraqi government institutions, according to an Iraqi military official who told Agence France-Presse.
Explosions were heard near the American embassy in Baghdad, and sirens sounded from the scene.
Last November, the Iraqi police and army said that security forces opened fire on a drone over the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad.
It is not yet clear whether the drone was armed, but an Iraqi soldier said that the initial assessment indicates that it was on a surveillance mission.
The sources reported that the drone flew away amid heavy gunfire to bring it down.
The Green Zone in the Iraqi capital includes the American embassy, other missions, and government headquarters.
