Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said in a speech on the occasion of his country assuming the rotating presidency of the European Union during the first six months of this year, "This presidency will be pioneering in many ways. It begins at a difficult time marked by conflicts, and our task will be to convince all 27 member states of the European Union that Europe can remain the safest and most stable place on earth. Security will be our top priority during the next six months." He added in his speech, which was published on the website of the new rotating presidency of the Union on its website, "We will implement a carefully planned common security policy, and provide Ukraine with the necessary support. This can only be achieved together. Our fundamental goals are linked to the security of our citizens, our countries, and the European Union as a whole. This is the kind of security that begins at home for every European and extends to the external borders of the European Union. We must work to strengthen the borders of the Union and confront the exploitation of migration. Solidarity is essential. We realise that common security is not only about strengthening Europe’s defence capabilities, but also about ensuring competitiveness, energy independence and food security.
Together, we are building a unified foundation for economic security – Europe’s competitiveness in the global race for innovation and technological development. Our goal is to maintain competitiveness, which is why we will work to reduce barriers for industry and entrepreneurs. The European Union is not just a policy of 27 countries, it is above all a single market and a trading network. These relations build our society, just as our core European values do: democracy, the rule of law, progress and cooperation.
We will do our utmost to ensure that Europe’s security is a reality, not just an aspiration. I hope that Poland will lead the efforts that lead to peace. Let us wish ourselves success in this endeavour.
