The Court of Justice of the European Union: Nearly half of the judges are women after the approval of the partial renewal

Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
Representatives of the governments of the European Union Member States appointed thirteen judges to the General Court on Wednesday. Nearly half of these are women (six women), according to a European statement issued in Brussels, a copy of which we received. These appointments are part of the partial renewal of the composition of the General Court, as the terms of 26 judges will expire on August 31, 2025.
Mr. Francesco Pestano (Italy) and Ms. Tanja Pavlin (Croatia) were appointed as judges to the General Court for their first term.
The terms of Mr. Hervé Cassagnabère (France), Mr. Saulius Lukas Kalėda (Lithuania), Mr. Ulf Öberg (Sweden), Ms. Tamara Perišin (Croatia), Mr. David Petrlík (Czech Republic), Ms. Inga Reine (Latvia), Ms. Petra Škvařilová-Pelzl (Czech Republic), and Mr. Laurent Truchot. (France) and Mr. Pēteris Zilgalvis (Latvia) were renewed.
These appointments are for a term of office from 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2031.
Furthermore, Ms. Danuti Jučinić (Lithuania) was appointed as a judge of the General Court, succeeding Mr. Rimvydas Norkus, who was appointed as an Advocate General of the Court of Justice, for the remainder of his term, which ends on 31 August 2025.
Finally, Mr. Jörgen Hytten (Sweden) was appointed as a judge of the General Court, succeeding Mr. Fredrik Schalin, who was appointed as a judge of the Court of Justice for the remainder of his term, which ends on 31 August 2025.
This decision will enter into force on the date of its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union. Judges of the General Court are appointed by mutual agreement between the governments of the Member States, after consulting a committee to assess the suitability of candidates for the duties concerned. They are chosen from among individuals of unquestionable independence. For appointment to the General Court, candidates must possess the qualifications required for high judicial office.
