
European Union: Decline in maritime transport behind decline in annual transport services exports to €245 billion, mostly to the United States, Britain, and China

European Union countries exported transport services worth €245 billion to non-EU countries in 2023, a 21.5% decrease compared to 2022. This decrease is mainly due to a decline in maritime transport, according to figures released by Eurostat, the European Statistical Office in Brussels. The statement added, "However, maritime transport remained the largest service category, accounting for half of exports (€122 billion, or 49.7%). Air transport came in second place with a value of €71 billion (28.8%), followed by other modes of transport with €40 billion (16.5%), and postal and delivery services with €12 billion (5.0%).
In 2023, air transport was the only transport service to experience growth in value (8.5%) compared to 2022, while maritime transport (-36.8%), other modes of transport (-3.5%), and postal and delivery services (-3.5%) recorded growth. The largest exports to non-EU countries in 2023 were to the United States (€43.1 billion, 17.6% of the total), the United Kingdom (€37.4 billion, 15.2%), and Switzerland (€22.4 billion, 9.1%). China (€15.7 billion, 6.4%) and Singapore (€11.3 billion, 4.6%) completed the top five.
Sea transport accounted for the majority of exports to Singapore (83.2%) and China (65.1%). Sea and air transport accounted for 45.7% and 45.6%, respectively, of EU exports of transport services to US customers. Trade with the United Kingdom showed a more balanced distribution, with air transport accounting for 37.2%, other modes of transport 35.2%, and maritime transport 22.2% of transport service exports. Other modes of transport (43.4%) and maritime transport (39.7%) accounted for the largest shares of transport service exports to Switzerland.
