Two prisoners made a failed escape attempt at Nieuwewandeling prison in Ghent, in the Flemish-speaking region of Belgium, during the night from Sunday to Monday. According to local media, including the newspaper Nieuwsblad, the escape occurred around 4:00 a.m. Monday morning. The two men reportedly made a hole in their cell wall and attempted to escape from the prison complex using a homemade ladder, most likely a hand-made one.
However, this was unsuccessful, according to Kathleen Van de Vijver, a spokeswoman for the prison service. The two prisoners were arrested.
During the escape attempt, one of the prisoners was seriously injured after falling from a height of several meters. He was taken to the hospital. The other prisoner was placed in a security cell. A large-scale security check is underway in the Nieuwewandeling prison area on Monday morning.
