IOM Assisted Over 17 Million People in a Year of "Immense Challenges"

New York: Europe and the Arabs

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) provided support to 17.8 million people in 170 countries and territories during 2025, a year marked by record levels of displacement and increasing humanitarian needs.

This was revealed in the organization's annual report, which highlights a year that was "full of enormous challenges," according to IOM Director General Amy Pope.

Boob added, "From assisting families displaced by conflict and disasters to supporting communities rebuilding after crises, the organization remained focused on providing practical solutions for people on the move and their host communities." The report's findings demonstrate the scale of current needs and what can be achieved when governments, partners, and communities work together. According to the UN Daily News, a copy of which we received Friday morning, the report highlights key achievements:

The UN's Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) – the world's largest source of essential data on displacement and mobility – operated in 76 countries and assessed the situations of 166.3 million people, informing 95% of response plans and identifying humanitarian needs for 2025.

The UN assumed a co-global leadership role in the Shelter, Land, and Site Coordination Group (LLCG) in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), strengthening the coordinated response to displacement crises worldwide.

Health Support
According to the report, health remained a cornerstone of the UN's response, with over 4.1 million medical consultations provided in crisis areas. Mental health and psychosocial support services were provided to 1.5 million people in 99 countries.

5.1 million people benefited from water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs.

More than 1.5 million people received protection services in 64 countries.

The Importance of Flexible Financing

With the increasing severity of climate impacts, IOM strengthened the resilience of nearly one million people at risk of displacement due to disasters in 34 countries. It also supported governments in integrating mobility considerations into their disaster preparedness and response plans.

Furthermore, IOM expanded opportunities for safe and orderly migration. In 2025, it supported more than 147 governments to strengthen migration governance and helped nearly 625,000 migrants access employment and study opportunities through skills mobility partnerships. The report highlighted the importance of flexible financing in light of increasing global needs, adding that thanks to a global portfolio of US$2.95 billion and a staff of more than 15,800 employees, the organization continued to save lives, support recovery, and help people move safely and with dignity.
