According to Greek media, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima have expanded their real estate holdings in Greece with a new country residence in Ekali, an upscale and exclusive suburb north of Athens.
The purchase price is reported to be approximately 15 million euros. This marks the royal couple’s second property in Greece; they already own a villa in Kranidi, on the coast of the Peloponnese, where they regularly spend their summers.
The residence in Ekali—referred to by local real estate agents as "Utopia"—is described as one of the most impressive private homes in the Athens area, according to the local outlet *Greek City Times*.
The main building spans approximately 1,500 square meters and is situated on a plot of land exceeding 5,500 square meters. Its architecture blends classic elegance with modern luxury, featuring high-quality materials and refined finishes. The estate also includes a separate 904-square-meter guesthouse, suitable for family, friends, or staff.
Inside, the residence boasts eleven bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom. It also features a cinema, a gym, a sauna, a game room, and a large outdoor swimming pool. The grounds are lavishly landscaped with Mediterranean flora and terraces that offer views over the hills of Attica. The property embodies the tranquility, privacy, and opulence characteristic of a royal residence. However, the alleged purchase is likely to reignite a debate in the Netherlands regarding the royal couple’s preference for Greece.
The couple previously faced criticism for their frequent stays there—most notably during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when international travel was discouraged. At the time, the Royal House emphasized that King Willem-Alexander "remains available and on standby" for his duties in the Netherlands, regardless of his location.
