The United Nations Special Coordinator in Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, and the Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), General Aroldo Lazaro, condemned the killing of civilians, including children and teenagers, in Majdal Shams in the Golan. According to the UN daily news bulletin
In a joint statement, the two UN officials said that civilians must be protected at all times. They urged the parties to exercise maximum restraint and cease the ongoing intense exchange of fire, warning that this could ignite a wider conflict that would plunge the entire region into an unimaginable catastrophe.
They confirmed that UNIFIL and the Office of the UN Special Coordinator in Lebanon are in contact with both Lebanon and Israel.
Children Bear the Burden of Violence
In turn, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, condemned the horrific rocket attack that struck the Druze town of Majdal Shams on Saturday, which killed at least 12 civilians, most of them children and teenagers.
“Children continue to bear the brunt of the horrific violence that the region is suffering from,” Wennesland said in a post on Twitter on Saturday. He urged everyone to exercise maximum restraint, stressing that the firing of rockets across the Blue Line must stop immediately. "The Middle East is on the brink of collapse; the world and the region cannot afford another open conflict," the UN official said.
The two UN officials stressed the need to put an end to the intense and ongoing exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah.
The Israeli army had earlier announced that the death toll from a rocket attack on a football stadium in Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights had risen to 12.
