  89,590 asylum seekers for the first time (from outside the European Union) applied for international protection in EU member states during the month of September, an increase of 11,995 people over the previous month, an increase of 15%. And compared to September 2021 (62,820), there was a 43% increase in the total number of applications.
A similar increase in the number of subsequent applicants (people who reapply for asylum after a decision has been made on an earlier application) has also been recorded.
In September 2022, there were 6,445 later applicants, 345 more people than August 2022, an increase of 6%.
And compared to September 2021, there was a decrease of 36%.
This is according to monthly refugee data published by the European Statistical Office in Brussels, Eurostat. It included a set of findings from the most detailed information on monthly refugee statistics.

  Most of the first-time asylum seekers are Syrians

As in August 2022, in September, Syrians were the largest group of asylum seekers (14,930 first-time applicants). They were followed by Afghans (11,955), then Turks (5,220), Indians (4,530), and Venezuelans (4,520).
And in the aftermath of Russia's military aggression against Ukraine, there was a significant increase in the number of Ukrainian asylum seekers for the first time (from 2,370 in February to 12,890 in March, but the numbers decreased every month (from 1,510 in April to 870 in September). This is also because people fleeing Ukraine They benefit from temporary protection.
In September, the number of people from Russia who applied for asylum for the first time was among the top 15 nationalities, with 1,305 applicants.

  Germany receives the largest number of asylum seekers for the first time

Since the beginning of 2022, Germany has been the member state reporting the largest number of asylum seekers in the European Union. In September 2022, Germany received 18,715 first-time applicants, which is 21% of the total. It is followed by Austria (15,490, 17%), France (13,500, 15%), Spain (11,000, 12%) and Italy (7,920, 9%).
Together, these five member states accounted for three-quarters (74%) of all first-time asylum seekers in the EU.
In total in the EU as a whole, there were 200 first-time asylum seekers per million population in September 2022.
Compared to the population of each Member State (as of January 1, 2022), the highest rate of first-time registered applicants in September 2022 was recorded in Austria (1,725 applicants per million inhabitants), followed by Cyprus (1,714), Croatia (475) and Luxembourg (466). By contrast, the lowest rate was observed in Hungary (0.4).

4,795 unaccompanied minors apply for asylum

In September 2022, 4,795 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum for the first time in EU Member States, an increase of 8% compared to August 2022 (4,460). This is among the EU member states for which data is available.
Most of the unaccompanied minors who applied for asylum in September 2022 came from Afghanistan (1952), Syria (1951) and Somalia (235).
The member states that received the highest number of asylum applications from unaccompanied minors in September 2022 were Austria (2,070), Germany (535), Belgium and the Netherlands (450 each).
Although Austria and Belgium saw an increase in the number of applications by 10% and 7% compared to August 2022, respectively, Germany recorded a decrease of 9% and the Netherlands by 22%.
