Barcelona: Agencies
A report issued by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health, published yesterday, Monday, stated that more than 47,000 people died in Europe due to high temperatures in 2023, and that the countries of the southern "old" continent are the most affected. According to what was reported by the Al-Youm Al-Sabea news website in Cairo
Last year was the hottest ever in the world. As temperatures continue to rise due to climate change, Europeans live in the world's fastest-warming continent, and face increasing health risks resulting from extreme heat.
The report issued by the Spanish research center stated that the death toll in 2023 was lower than the death estimates for the previous year at more than 60,000 heat-related deaths, and that the 2023 numbers could have been 80 percent higher had it not been for the measures taken in the past twenty years to help people adapt to rising temperatures, such as early warning systems and improved health care.
