Continuing a 23-year tradition, the training course on the future of the European Union will once again be held at the International University of Menéndez and Pelayo (UIMP) in Santander, Spain, between 19 and 23 August 2024. As in previous editions, the course will be moderated by Josep Borrell, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission. The speakers will be politicians, from EU Member States, professors and experts. Political leaders from EU Member States, Ukraine and other candidate countries, members of the European Parliament, university professors and experts on the most important geopolitical issues will participate in the course. According to the website of the European External Action Service in Brussels, which added under the title "The European Union as a geopolitical actor", in a context marked by the war in Ukraine and its consequences for the economy, global stability and the emergence of China, the course will address the position of the European Union as a geopolitical actor, its contribution to European security and its relations with the United States, China and other regions of the world. Josep Borrell and Dmytro Kuleba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine (online) will participate in the opening session “The EU in the face of war and peace in Ukraine”. The second session will focus on EU support to Ukraine. According to the published program for the session, the sessions will begin on Monday with a session entitled “The European Union as a Global Player in a Changing World.” In the afternoon, there will be a session on the European Union in Times of Crisis, followed by another session entitled “The European Political Landscape after the Elections,” and a third on “Europe and Africa: Towards a New Partnership.” The following day, “Tuesday, there will be a discussion session on the European economy facing the triple challenge of stability, competitiveness, and economic security.” In the afternoon, there will be a session on “Europe between the United States and China.” On Wednesday morning, there will be a session on “The War on the Borders of the European Union and Defensive Europe.” In the afternoon, the European Union facing the invasion of Ukraine (roundtable). On Thursday morning, there will be a session on “Europe between Two Wars.” The European Union and the Crisis in the Middle East, with the attendance of Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of UNRWA.
