Brussels: Europe and the Arabs
European Commission President Ursula Vonderlein said she spoke with Finnish Prime Minister Petri Orpo about the investigation into the gas pipeline and data cable that were damaged this weekend. The ongoing investigation is based on the assumption of a possible intentional act. Vonderlein also spoke with Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas about her assessment of the situation.
A statement issued in Brussels quoted the European official as saying, “I strongly condemn any act of deliberate destruction of critical infrastructure. Our underwater pipelines and cables connect citizens and businesses across Europe and the rest of the world. They are the lifeblood of financial markets and global trade. This is the time.” The second in just over a year that this type of critical infrastructure has been damaged. We stand in full solidarity with Finland and Estonia.
The President of the European Commission added, "I assured the Prime Ministers of Finland and Estonia that the European Commission will continue to cooperate with Member States and NATO to strengthen resilience in the face of threats to our vital infrastructure."
Only by working together can we confront those who seek to undermine our security, and ensure our critical infrastructure remains strong and reliable in the face of evolving threats.
