The International Organization for Migration reported on Sunday that 61 migrants, including women and children, drowned after their rubber boat capsized off the coast of Libya.

The International Organization for Migration in Libya said: “According to survivors, the boat left the Libyan coast from Zuwara with about 86 people on board.” The ship was unable to withstand the high waves in the Mediterranean Sea. A total of 25 people were rescued and transferred to a Libyan detention center in Tariq al-Sikka near Tripoli. They were all in good health.
“More than 2,250 people have died in the central Mediterranean this year,” lamented Flavio Di Giacomo, spokesman for the International Organization for Migration’s coordination office in the Mediterranean. He added: "This alarming figure shows that unfortunately not enough is being done to save lives at sea."
For migrants trying to reach Europe by landing illegally on Italian coasts, Libya and Tunisia are the main departure points in the central Mediterranean. More than 153,000 migrants from Libya and Tunisia have arrived in Italy this year, according to the latest figures released by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on December 10.
It is noteworthy that last October, the International Organization for Migration reported that 3 weeks after the devastating “Daniel” storm struck in Libya, an estimated 42,045 people were displaced due to floods in northeastern Libya, with reports indicating that some families had returned to their homes.
